Do you remember the exhilaration you feel the first time you dig
into the soil each spring, the way it feels between your fingers, and
how good it smells? Has the recent sun got you plotting and planning
this year's gardening pursuits? Mark your calendar, The Belfast Garden
Club's Annual Green Thumb Plant Sale will take place Saturday, May 15th
9-11am, at The Belfast Boathouse (at the harbor end of Commercial
Street). A wide array of annuals, perennials, vines, herbs, and
vegetables will be available and aching to be planted in your garden.
Other Gardening related items will also be for sale. The annual plant
sale is a benefit for Belfast Garden Club activities in
the community and our scholarship fund for higher education relating to
the goals of the Club.
If you are a gardener and you will be dividing
perennials, or starting extra seedlings this spring, please consider
donating them to the Belfast Garden Club Green Thumb Plant Sale! To do
so, deliver the labeled and potted plants to The Belfast Boathouse on Friday, May 14 from
10 a.m. until Noon. For questions about the plant sale, or for
alternative drop off options, please call Diane
Allmayer-Beck 338-3105.
The Belfast Garden Club has promoted civic
beautification and presented speakers to stimulate the knowledge and
love of gardening since 1929. The Belfast Garden Club is responsible for
maintaining over 12 public
gardens in the City; The Public Landing, Public Restrooms (Water-Loo),
Post Office Square, Belfast Free Library Gardens, City Hall,
Margaret's Point, Crab Tree Alley and Pavilion at City Park, Coast
Guard Station, Police Station, Historical Society and Thompson's Wharf.
This year we are using a $5000 grant from the Golden Rule Foundation to
improve the garden around the Chapel at the Grove Cemetery. Look for
the Pink Tulips planted to support Breast Cancer Research that are
planted in front of the Chapel; they should be blooming soon! The
Garden Club hosts the Open Garden Days all summer, gives a $1000
scholarship to a college student each year, donates $500 to the Troy
Howard Middle School for their garden, and donates $250 for gardening
and related books to the library each year, has monthly environmental
and conservation talks as well as monthly speakers on garden related
topics. All of our meetings and talks are open to the public. We also
donate towards the Christmas Wreaths on the city lampposts and decorate
the Library trees at the Holidays. The Club welcomes new members year
round.
